Knowing God

Read: Isaiah 45: 1-8

God has called us by name. He has chosen us and has surnamed us. Yet we have not known Him! God wants us to get to know Him – personally.

This poem Knowing God I wrote a while ago, and reminds me of the time I used to walk my son to school. At the top of our driveway is a bus stop. Each day as we walked passed, we saw a man standing there waiting for a bus. He was there every morning. Over a period of time, as I walked my son to school, I became familiar with his face. Though I was familiar with what he looked like, I never knew him. I didn’t know where he came from, what his name was, or anything about him. He was just a familiar face to me.

I think of that in relation to how it is with God and us. We may know about Him, we may even go to church, and have been in church all our lives and think we know God. But do we really know Him intimately? Has He made His home in your heart? The only way we can truly know Him intimately, with a personal daily relationship with Him, is to invite Jesus Christ into our hearts. That is the first step to being transformed from inside out. We need to move beyond just knowing about Him, to really knowing Him intimately.

Ephesians 3: 19 says “[That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]!”

Ephesians 3: 17 says “May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love”.
