Devotional: An Enlightened Heart
Our hearts flooded with light by the Holy Spirit
And [I pray] that
the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the
Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation]
to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints (God's people).
- Ephesians 1:18 (AMP)
This is a Scripture
that I often pray for myself and for my family.
The eyes of our hearts,
the very core of our being, needs to be enlightened—flooded with the light of the Holy Spirit—which gives us
spiritual understanding and insight. The Holy Spirit leads us into the truths of His Word and teaches us as
we read the Scriptures—it's then we will be enlightened!
We need to allow the
Holy Spirit to teach us as we read the Bible and ask Him to help us read Scripture through the lens of the
Holy Spirit—not through the lens of our own understanding. The Bible is spiritually discerned, so we need
the Holy Spirit to teach us—helping us to correctly interpret Scripture.
(1 Corinthians 2:14-15)
Whatever the Holy
Spirit reveals to us will always be in line with what the Scriptures already say. He will never say something
that would contradict Scripture—His written Word.
The Holy Spirit
leads us into truth, but we need to make sure that we're following Him into truth!
The other thing that
happens when we are enlightened—flooded with light by the Holy Spirit—is that the light exposes and reveals
anything that may not be of God. It also exposes and reveals any error we may be believing. We need to allow
the Holy Spirit to flood the very depths of our soul, our innermost being, with His light of truth, revealing
and exposing to us anything we need to put off, or any error that needs correcting.
The most important
thing to remember is that we need to stay open to the work of the Holy Spirit and remain teachable and pliable
in His hands as He moulds us and shapes us into His image.
This is the prayer I
pray from Ephesians 1:17-19 (Amplified Bible),
for myself and for my family, you may like to make it your prayer as well:
I pray that You,
Lord, may grant me a spirit of wisdom and of revelation [that gives me a deep and personal and intimate
insight] into the true knowledge of You. And [I pray] that the eyes of my heart [the very centre and core of
my being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that I will know and cherish the
hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which You have called me, the riches of Your
glorious inheritance in the saints (God's people), and [so that I will begin to know] what the immeasurable
and unlimited and surpassing greatness of Your [active, spiritual] power is in us who believe.
